John Pohl spent four years as the Senior Vice President of Global Marketing & Strategic Planning at Hu-Friedy Mfg., America's largest manufacturer of dental instruments. The owners of Hu-Friedy, a B2B company, had recruited John because of his track record in the B2C space. Their hope was that John's strategic and creative skills would enable the company to accelerate its revenue and profit growth and fend off incursions being made by lower cost (and lower quality) brands.
Did the experiment work? One measure is to look at how Hu-Friedy ranked in annual studies of advertising impact commissioned by RDH, one of the dental industry's most respected publications,

Each year over 80 dental industry manufacturers had their magazine ads assessed and ranked for their ability to get readers to notice, read and remember their ads. Many of these manufacturers were iconic companies with big names, big budgets and big agencies developing their ads. In contrast, Hu-Friedy - despite being the #1 player in the relatively small dental instrument category - was a fraction of the size of most of these companies. What's more, Hu-Friedy's ads were created by a small in-house agency that reported to John, who often played the role of copywriter.

Against all odds, Hu-Friedy did quite well.
In fact, during all four of John's years there, Hu-Friedy was ranked #1 in the entire dental industry for advertising impact.
A more important measure of success: During all four years, Hu-Friedy set records for revenues and profits.
That inspired John to found 14th Floor Solutions, with Hu-Friedy as his first client.

John founded 14th Floor Solutions in 2007 following a highly successful four year stint as SVP Global Marketing & Strategic Planning at Hu-Friedy, where he was recruited to bring a new strategic and creative perspective that drove four straight years of record sales and profits.
He developed that perspective during a 25 year career in the consumer products industry, where he served as VP Marketing for Dial Corp (where he helped make Dial Soap the #1 bar soap in America), VP Marketing for Cobra Electronics (which he helped achieve significant profitability after seven years of red ink and become the #1 brand of radar detectors and two-way radios), and Director of Marketing for both Kellogg Company (where he helped make Frosted Flakes and Special K the industry's largest and fastest-growing brands, respectively) and the E. & J. Gallo Winery (where he helped make E&J the fastest-growing distilled spirit in industry history).
John's decision to found 14th Floor Solutions was rooted in his conviction that too many companies--and their agencies--fail to strategically differentiate their products and services from their competition, and then fail to market those products and services in ways that are compelling, concise and memorable.
Since 2007, 14th Floor Solutions has served over 60 amazing clients ranging from startups to multi-billion dollar international corporations.
John, who claims to be the world's most charming and handsome Chief Elevator Operator (as well as the only one), is a proud native of Bemidji, MN. He holds a secondary school degree from Phillips Exeter Academy, a BA in economics from Claremont McKenna College, and an MBA from the Booth School of Business at the University of Chicago.
